A friend of mine who runs a processing factory hired a technician not long ago to make the factory’s surveillance cameras viewable “on his phone.” The technician walked around, then quoted RMB 3,800: replace all eight cameras and add a new recorder. He showed me the quote and asked whether it was worth it. I said don’t replace anything yet — your existing Hikvision recorder and cameras don’t need to be swapped out at all; the reason you can’t view them from outside isn’t a problem with the equipment, it’s that the network isn’t connected. Full disclosure first: we make Yuxinan, a multi-site networking product, so we’re an interested party. Every claim below about our own product comes with a way for you to verify it yourself.

First, be clear: are you “haven’t installed cameras yet” or “installed them but can’t view them”?

These two situations have completely different solutions. If you haven’t installed anything yet, just buy a camera kit with a cloud platform (mainstream brands run two to three hundred per unit, and you can view them by scanning a QR code with your phone) — no need to read further. This article is for people whose cameras and recorder were installed long ago, but who are completely in the dark the moment they step outside the factory gate: small factories, warehouses, and shops are almost always in this situation.

Why can’t you view them once you leave the factory? The recorder (NVR) only lives on the factory’s local area network; its address is an internal address, and outside the factory gate it simply doesn’t exist on the public internet. For your phone to connect to it from elsewhere, your phone first has to be able to “get into the factory network.” Every approach differs only in this “how to get in.”

Approach 1: Manufacturer cloud app (free, but three pitfalls)

Hikvision’s EZVIZ Cloud and Dahua’s Imou — bind the recorder by scanning a code and your phone can view it. Zero cost, and we’ll grant that first. The three pitfalls are real too: the video is relayed through the manufacturer’s cloud servers, so it lags with many viewers and spins during peak hours; many recorders bought three or four years ago don’t support it, or support it but drop offline constantly; and the video content passes through a third party’s servers — if that bothers you, see our security article. Fine for temporary use, but if you’re counting on it to watch your factory every day, you’ll most likely be disappointed.

Approach 2: Port forwarding on the router (never do this)

The veteran technician’s classic move: map the recorder’s port to the public internet on the router, then type the public IP directly into your phone. It works, but it amounts to leaving the recorder naked on the internet — scanners sweep it hundreds of times a day, and cameras and recorders are precisely the devices most heavily brute-forced on the internet; a weak password gets cracked the same day. More than half of the “surveillance footage leaked online” news stories in recent years come from exactly this. The cost of this path was worked out in the NAS/ERP security article, with the same conclusion: don’t use it.

Approach 3: Networking — make your phone “a device inside the factory”

This is the approach we recommend, and the real alternative to that RMB 3,800 quote. Put one networking terminal in the factory, install the client on your phone, and the two form a single logical large local area network. Even if your phone is a thousand miles away, to the recorder it is “another computer inside the factory”: open Hikvision iVMS-4200 (or Dahua’s own app), add the device, enter the recorder’s internal IP, and live video, playback, and PTZ control all come through, exactly as if you were on the factory Wi-Fi.

Compared with approach 1, the differences are in three places: the video never passes through any third-party cloud — the phone connects directly to the factory with end-to-end encryption (if a direct connection can’t be established, it automatically switches to a cloud relay, and what the relay carries is ciphertext as well); old recorders work just as well, as long as they have a network port; and when you later add a second factory, warehouse, or shop, put a terminal at each site and view them all in one app. Unified viewing across multiple sites is covered in the surveillance article.

Is there enough bandwidth? Let’s do the math

Viewing surveillance remotely doesn’t use much bandwidth. The key is to distinguish the main stream from the sub-stream: recording storage uses the main stream, but it’s stored on the factory’s hard drive, so it doesn’t consume network bandwidth at all; phone preview uses the sub-stream, which is only a few hundred Kbps per channel. Even if a direct connection can’t be established and traffic goes through the cloud relay (2 Mbps on the free version), watching two or three sub-streams at once is enough. Stuttering is usually the factory’s own broadband falling short — that troubleshooting method is in the network speed article, and whether a dropped connection recovers on its own is covered in the stability article.

Try it yourself — that beats hearing it from anyone

Yuxinan’s free trial is ?0 forever and includes an allowance of 2 terminals (allowances include hardware), which is exactly “one in the factory + one on the phone.” Once installed, one action is enough: turn off your phone’s Wi-Fi and switch to 4G, open iVMS-4200, add the recorder’s internal IP, and tap preview. If the picture appears, you’re set; if it doesn’t, just delete it — you haven’t spent a cent. The boundary between the free and paid versions is described in this article.

FAQ

Q: My recorder was bought three or four years ago and doesn’t support cloud platforms. Can I still do this?
A: Yes. Networking doesn’t care about the recorder — as long as it has a network port and is still working normally. Your phone accesses its internal address directly through the networking, without going through any cloud platform, so there’s no difference between old and new devices.

Q: Can I view playback on my phone, or only live video?
A: Playback, snapshots, and PTZ control all work. The phone is effectively “inside the factory network,” so anything you can do in iVMS-4200 you can do here, just like using the PC client at the factory.

Q: No one in the factory understands computers. Is setup troublesome?
A: The networking terminal just needs power and a network cable, and you install an app on your phone. Nothing on the recorder side needs to change — it’s already running fine on the internal network; the networking simply lets your phone into that internal network too.

Q: Several people want to watch — the boss, the plant manager, the security lead. Can they be managed separately?
A: Yes. Who can watch, and which sites they can watch, are authorized individually per person. When someone leaves, just turn off their access; it doesn’t affect anyone else.
